Job Description

  • Oversee day to day joining activities and personnel at the Auburn Hills facility

 

  • Develop and lead research projects in advanced technologies to strengthen Valiant’s position as an integrator of joining projects. This may include, but is not limited to, responding to customer requests/issues, industry needs, and emerging technologies

 

  • Provide initial weld engineering support.  This includes, but is not limited to; authoring weld documentation, creating weld schedules, and associated offline programming.

 

  • Communicate with the customer and Valiant’s Engineering, Project Management, and Manufacturing Management to ensure delivered weld quality of equipment

 

  • Provide recommendations to processing.

 

  • Obtain and understand customer specifications.

 

  • Provide recommendations on equipment both for internal use and for customers.

 

  • Work with controls engineering to ensure correct equipment is ordered.

 

  • Attend weekly project management meetings to provide welding answers.

 

  • Coordinate and communicate with customer weld engineer and end use weld engineer to ensure corporate and plant approval of weld systems.

 

  • Support weld equipment buy-offs.  Requirements are to: verify equipment meets design prints, verify equipment meets customer requirements, and verify working condition of equipment.

 

  • Set up weld equipment for initial part runs.  This includes: equipment verification, equipment calibration, input starting weld parameters, weld coupons, work with robot programmers to ensure correct welds and locations, verify weld quality through destructive measures, make parameter changes as needed based on results from previous, document weld quality, update weld documentation.

 

  • Verify weld quality through destructive testing including cut and etch for GMA welds and air chisel/nippers for resistance welds. Document results to provide to customer.

 

  • Verify sealer and mastic for door line projects (included as part of destruct method for weld quality) and recommend any adjustments if needed to robot programmers.

 

  • Learn new equipment as best as possible in order to succeed in implementation.

 

  • Provide installation support. This includes: equipment calibration re-verification, work with robot programmers to ensure correct weld locations, verify weld quality, make parameter changes as needed based on results from previous, document weld quality, update weld documentation, ensure weld lines are running to the quoted expectation of the customer, i.e. cycle time, throughput, flash free, adaptive weld controls, train receiving plant weld engineer and floor personnel on installed equipment.

 

  • Provide support to plant personnel post installation.

 

  • Maintain spare parts.

 

  • Support Valiant divisions for equipment recommendations, internal weld production, and auditing.

 

  • Assume other accountabilities and duties as assigned by the Manager, Joining Engineering.

Job Requirements

A Degree in Engineering is required. (Mechanical, Systems, Welding/Joining, or related field).

Direct experience and demonstrated capabilities in various welding and joining processes including but not limited to arc welding, resistance welding, laser welding, sealer/adhesive and mechanical joining. Experience in one or more of the following industries is a must – automotive, aerospace, construction and forestry vehicles/equipment manufacturing industries.

Leadership abilities in coordinating project requirements among co-workers inside the Company or from engineering contract outsource agencies.

A strong desire for research into advanced technologies and the ability to plan and execute projects accordingly.

Exercise tact and diplomacy when dealing with customers.

Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high pressure environment including following assembly lines during design and commissioning stage, through installation, startup and post production start.

Ability and willingness to travel to any of the customer’s and Company’s work locations in North America, Europe and Asia, as required by Management.

Must be willing to work extended hours, if and when necessary, including overtime, weekends and holidays and on night shift, as project and customer demands dictate.

Ability to work with others, including peers and personnel in other departments and also the ability to educate and coach technicians and skill trade of the importance of Welding/Joining related activities

Motivated to be a self-learner and the ability to continuously improve and be educated of current requirements in the area of Welding and Joining.
